Role Overview

Patient Watch Security Officers play an essential role in the healthcare system by providing dedicated, one-on-one safety observation for patients who may pose a risk to themselves or others. Working directly within hospital environments, your visual presence allows doctors and nurses to focus on clinical care while you maintain a calm, safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

This role is a strong fit if you excel at active listening, remain calm under pressure, and want to perform meaningful work that directly impacts community well-being. You will receive fully paid professional training, earn a competitive wage, and work flexible shifts across regional hospital facilities.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this position comes down to steady visual vigilance, empathy, and clear communication. You will work closely alongside nursing and medical teams while maintaining strict patient confidentiality and clear professional boundaries.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining continuous, uninterrupted visual observation of assigned patients to ensure their safety and prevent harm.

  • Monitoring patient behavior closely and immediately notifying clinical staff of any changes in condition or risk level.

  • Using calm, non-defensive communication and de-escalation techniques to handle tense or sensitive moments.

  • Keeping accurate observation logs and writing clear, objective incident reports using computer software and two-way radios.

  • Screening and directing visitors in a courteous, professional manner.

  • Adapting to quiet periods requiring prolonged sitting as well as dynamic situations requiring quick action.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Work Authorization: Legally authorized to work in Canada and meet the legal age requirement for security licensing in Alberta.

  • Background Check: A clean criminal record check.

  • Driver's License & Vehicle: A valid Class 5 driver's license, access to a reliable personal vehicle, and a willingness to travel to regional hospital locations up to a 500 km radius for assigned shifts.

  • Shift Availability: Open availability to accept on-demand shifts on short notice, including days, overnights, and weekends.

  • Communication & Professionalism: Strong interpersonal skills, reliable discretion with sensitive health information, and the ability to stay focused during extended observation periods.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • A valid Alberta Security License or completion of Basic Security Training (BST).

  • Current First Aid certification.

  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training or experience with non-violent crisis resolution.

  • Prior experience in healthcare security, patient support, or customer service.

Compensation & Paid Training

  • Starting Pay: $23.00 per hour.

  • Travel Allowance: Mileage reimbursement at standard company rates for assigned regional travel.

  • Employer-Provided Training: Fully covered Healthcare Security Training. First Aid certification is also provided if you do not currently hold a valid certificate.
