  • Ongoing opportunities to learn new skills, explore different roles and grow your career across sectors and regions

Here's how a Senior Buyer for PCL Construction Management Inc. within Edmonton Buildings contributes to our team:

Responsibilities

  • Execute day-to-day procurement of materials, assets, equipment, and services in accordance with company policies and procedures, using cost-effective approaches for each transaction.
  • Source, evaluate, and select suppliers against specification, price, quantity, quality, safety, and delivery requirements, with a clear understanding of “Best Value.”
  • Administer the formal bid process — RFQs, technical and commercial review, bid conditioning, and award — and negotiate procurement details with suppliers.
  • Create, issue, and administer purchase documents throughout their term, including major purchase orders, equipment rental/lease agreements, and service agreements; apply relevant supply agreements to daily purchases.
  • Interpret plans and specifications to ensure procurement satisfies project requirements; perform price discovery to support estimating.
  • Coordinate project preplanning, mobilization, and job start activities, and support planning for long-lead and critical path items.
  • Evaluate rent vs. buy scenarios for equipment; develop advanced commodity knowledge, including equipment and small-tool repair costs and processes, and support preventive maintenance and minor repair requirements (e.g., tires, batteries).
  • Develop and maintain constructive, customer-focused relationships with suppliers, service providers, internal departments, and project customers.
  • Evaluate and manage the supplier base for capability, performance, quality, responsiveness, and delivery reliability; recommend suppliers based on value, risk, schedule, and project requirements.
  • Maintain marketplace knowledge and key industry contacts; assess the impact of market trends and economic conditions on acquisition activities.
  • Resolve material, service, and commercial conflicts at the department and supplier levels, escalating as required.
  • Coordinate delivery schedules aligned with project requirements and construction sequencing, recognizing the impact of procurement on field activities and schedule.
  • Proactively expedite and follow up on purchase orders to ensure on-time delivery and to resolve material discrepancies, overdue deliveries, warranty claims, returns, and incorrect invoices.
  • Anticipate supply chain disruptions and implement mitigation strategies; work with logistics providers, vendors, and project teams to resolve transportation, receiving, and delivery challenges.
  • Identify, escalate, and help mitigate current and future risks related to schedule, price, supply availability, quality, service, and logistics.
  • Ensure all purchases are conducted ethically and legally, in compliance with company policies, contractual obligations, and applicable legislation, regulations, standards, and best practices.
  • Maintain accurate procurement records and tracking systems; communicate purchasing procedures to departments and projects.
  • Seek innovative products, technologies, and processes that bring best value to PCL; champion initiatives that reduce non-value-added activities and streamline processes.
  • Partner with project managers, superintendents, construction managers, field operations, and suppliers to support successful project delivery.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, solutions-focused team culture; value and model PCL’s solution-provider and profitability culture.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Postsecondary diploma or degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Commerce, Logistics, Construction Management, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • SCMP, CPSM, or a related procurement and equipment designation (held or in progress) is considered an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive procurement, supply chain, or buying experience.
  • Experience supporting large-scale industrial, commercial, or infrastructure projects is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex procurement packages, supplier relationships, and logistics coordination in fast-paced environments with demanding schedules and multiple stakeholders.
  • Solid construction knowledge — specifications, methods, procedures, and permanent/non-permanent materials, services, tools, and equipment.
  • Strong commercial acumen and negotiating skills, with the ability to make sound financial decisions.
  • Advanced understanding of supply chain processes, project life cycle, procurement best practices, and risk.
  • Critical thinking: problem solving, judgement, and decision making under pressure.
  • Excellent organization, planning, and time management; able to prioritize shifting, competing demands with a sense of urgency.
  • High personal accountability, ownership, attention to detail, and follow-through.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and within a team-oriented project environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication; tactful, diplomatic interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional customer service and stakeholder relationship management; leverages industry relationships for competitive advantage.
  • Working knowledge of procurement laws and regulations; commitment to integrity, ethics, and corporate social responsibility.
  • Advanced computer literacy (Microsoft Excel, Microsoft 365, procurement systems, reporting tools); able to train and coach others.
  • Willingness to work extended hours when required to meet critical project milestones.
