Job description

About Rootly

At Rootly, we are on a mission to be the go-to way companies respond when things go wrong, helping every organization be more reliable. We do this by building an industry-leading incident management platform that allows companies around the world to consistently and quickly resolve incidents. We are not simply transforming an industry, we are carving out a new multi-billion-dollar category ourselves and need incredible talent to achieve this ambitious goal together.

Customers love Rootly. Some of the fastest-growing companies around the world such as NVIDIA, DoorDash, Uber, Canva, Tripadvisor, Squarespace and more rely on Rootly to power their critical incident management process. They obsess over our delightful enterprise-ready platform and unique partnership model. See why our customers have reviewed us 5 stars on G2.

Investors love Rootly. We are backed by some of the most respected funds in the world from Y Combinator to operators like the CTO of Dropbox and GitHub. We'd be happy to disclose our entire funding and profitability picture live during the interview. As a culture we relentlessly put transparency first. We conduct monthly financial reviews as a team so everyone has a pulse on the health of the business and publish what we are building in our weekly changelog.

About the Role

This is a rare opportunity to join Rootly as an early engineer and fundamentally shape our trajectory. You will experience the balance of being scrappy while building a product that operates at scale. The work you do today might look radically different tomorrow, and that's the fun of it. We are looking for engineers who don't just execute but drive, challenge, and elevate the work around them.

We are building a team that moves with speed, taste, and impact. Every engineer at Rootly is expected to bring the magic, whether that's jumping on a 5-minute fix, shipping a feature that delights users, or continuously refining and improving our product experience. We want individuals who obsess over engineering excellence, think in systems, and raise the bar for those around them. If you thrive in an environment where ownership is rewarded, good enough isn't good enough, and speed is a superpower, this is the place for you.

What You'll Do

  • Own end-to-end feature development, from scoping to production, ensuring quality, performance, and delightful UX.
  • Bring an obsessive level of taste to the product. You sweat the details, making sure the experience is polished and intuitive. You don't just build software; you craft experiences.
  • Think in systems, not just features. You connect the dots across tech debt, scalability concerns, and new features to make sure we're always a step ahead.
  • Act like an owner. When you see a problem, you fix it. When you don't know how, you figure it out. You drive work forward, proactively and with urgency.
  • Raise the bar and inspire those around you. You bring energy and passion to the team, setting a high standard for craftsmanship, speed, and impact.
  • Show a bias for action. You move fast, ship fast, and get things done. You know that perfection is the enemy of progress, and you optimize for high-velocity impact.
  • Work closely with customers to shape the product and provide support that goes beyond closing tickets. You build relationships and make users love Rootly.
  • Architect and scale core infrastructure, ensuring reliability and performance at every level.

What You'll Need

We care more about execution, ownership, and impact than fancy degrees or FAANG experience. If the following resonates with you, we want to hear from you:

  • Rails and JavaScript experience: you have 5+ years working with Ruby on Rails, Ruby, and JavaScript, with Hotwire, ViewComponents, Tailwind, or similar frameworks as a bonus.
  • Strong full-stack capabilities: you can dive into backend infrastructure as comfortably as you craft delightful front-end experiences.
  • Great taste: you know what looks good, what feels good, and how to make an experience magical. You sweat the details because they matter.
  • Bias toward action: small imperfections drive you crazy, and you fix them instead of waiting for someone else to do it.
  • Deep systems thinking: you build for scale and longevity, not just for the next sprint, and you think about architecture holistically.
  • An obsession with engineering excellence: you care deeply about performance, reliability, security, and quality.
  • Strong communication skills: you can explain complex technical concepts simply and effectively to both engineers and non-engineers.
  • Product instinct: you don't just take tickets; you challenge ideas, see the bigger picture, and contribute to the end-to-end user journey.
  • A collaborative mindset: you don't work in silos. You push others to be better and elevate the team through code reviews, mentorship, and knowledge sharing.
  • A sense of urgency: you know that every minute counts, and you work with intensity and focus.

Our Stack

  • Backend: Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, Redis, Sidekiq
  • Frontend: Turbo, Stimulus, ViewComponents
  • Infrastructure: AWS, Terraform (IaC)
  • DevOps and Tooling: GitHub, Slack, Notion, Rootly

Why Rootly?

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 3 weeks of vacation, plus unlimited sick and mental health days, and a company-wide end-of-year shutdown to recharge.
  • $500 stipend for home office setup.
  • Unlimited token usage and access to AI tools.
