Position Summary

The Lead Software Engineer (Azure) is a senior, hands-on engineer who serves as the technical lead for the organization’s internally developed applications and integrations. The role combines four core accountabilities: senior software engineering, Level 3 application support, application architecture, and technical mentorship of the development team. Acting as the primary technical delegate to the IT Manager, the position owns application design and technical standards, serves as the final escalation point for complex production issues, mentors intermediate developers, and delivers scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions on Microsoft Azure using modern DevOps, CI/CD, and automation practices.

Key Responsibilities

Software Engineering and Development

· Design, develop, and deliver end-to-end solutions for internally developed applications, services, APIs, and integrations, remaining hands-on in day-to-day coding.

· Write clean, testable, secure, and maintainable code using the organization’s approved technology stack.

· Develop new applications and enhance existing functionality based on business and technical requirements.

· Modernize legacy applications to improve performance, usability, maintainability, reliability, and security.

· Translate business requirements into practical, scalable technical solutions in partnership with IT colleagues and business stakeholders.

Application Architecture

· Own and maintain the application architecture for internally developed systems, including reference designs, integration patterns, data models, and non-functional requirements such as scalability, availability, performance, and security.

· Define and enforce coding standards, design patterns, and engineering best practices across the development team.

· Lead architecture and design reviews and document key technical decisions through architecture decision records.

· Maintain a technical debt and modernization roadmap and recommend priorities to the IT Manager.

· Provide technical input on build-versus-buy decisions and evaluate third-party solutions, vendor integrations, and new technologies.

Level 3 Application Support

· Serve as the final technical escalation point (Level 3) for internally developed applications and integrations, beyond the Service Desk and Level 1/Level 2 support.

· Own complex production incidents through to resolution, including diagnosis, root-cause analysis, permanent fixes, and post-incident reviews.

· Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot system integrations and system-to-system data flows.

· Establish and maintain application monitoring, logging, and alerting to proactively identify issues and performance degradation.

· Create and maintain runbooks, support procedures, and known-error documentation to strengthen Level 1/Level 2 support capability.

Technical Leadership and Team Enablement

· Act as the technical pillar for intermediate developers, providing mentorship, pairing, coaching, and onboarding support.

· Serve as final reviewer and approver for code reviews and pull requests, ensuring quality and adherence to standards.

· Act as the first point of technical escalation for the development team and help unblock delivery.

· Serve as the technical delegate for the IT Manager, providing coverage on technical decisions and during absences.

· Lead technical estimation, backlog refinement, and sprint and release planning, and provide technical go/no-go recommendations for production releases.

· Represent the development team in technical discussions with business stakeholders and vendors.

Cloud, DevOps and Automation

· Design, build, and support cloud-native solutions on Microsoft Azure, including App Service, Container Apps, Azure Functions, Azure SQL, Key Vault, and Entra ID application authentication.

· Own and continuously improve CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions, including build, test, and deployment automation.

· Implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code (Bicep or Terraform) for repeatable, consistent environments.

· Prepare and lead application releases, upgrades, patches, and production deployments.

· Identify and automate repeatable engineering and operational processes, and evaluate practical AI and automation opportunities through prototypes.

Testing and Documentation

· Develop automated test suites and test cases to confirm application reliability and functionality.

· Create and maintain solution designs, technical specifications, deployment instructions, and operational documentation that support knowledge transfer and future development.

· Document technical risks, recommendations, and lessons learned, and communicate them to the IT Manager and stakeholders.

Security and Compliance

· Apply secure development, access control, patching, dependency management, and security review practices throughout the application lifecycle.

· Investigate and support the resolution of security alerts and vulnerabilities affecting internally developed applications.

· Ensure solutions follow applicable security protocols, internal policies, and compliance requirements.

Key Competencies

· Strong expertise in software architecture, system design, and modern application development.

· Advanced hands-on development, debugging, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis skills, with a calm, methodical approach to production incidents.

· Strong knowledge of Azure, DevOps, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, automated testing, monitoring, and release practices.

· Strong knowledge of APIs, databases, integrations, and application security.

· Ability to translate business requirements into practical, scalable, and maintainable technical solutions.
