Job Description:

Staff Software Developer (Payments)

Our platforms handle mission-critical transactions across global travel partners, and we need someone ready to technically lead our payments ecosystem so no transaction ever fails.

What You'll Be Doing

You will technically lead the Payments team to centralize and evolve our transaction processing architecture across Plusgrade's growing business units. Most of your time will go toward designing scalable services that orchestrate multiple payment service providers, implement resilient routing logic, and run drama-free production releases. Engineering workflows like testing and code reviews are augmented by AI, giving you space to focus on complex distributed logic, idempotency, and high-stakes data integrity. You will own technical direction end to end, leading architecture discussions at the whiteboard and setting standards that make the entire engineering organization faster and more resilient.

The Stack

Java (Spring) · TypeScript · React · AWS (ECS, EKS) · GCP · Docker · Datadog

What You Bring

  • You have hands-on experience integrating multiple payment service providers and designing bulletproof payment flows around authorization, capture, refunds, voiding, and automated reconciliation.
  • You build maintainable, high-throughput backend services in Java and the Spring framework, with enough full-stack comfort in TypeScript and React to reason across the whole user journey.
  • You deploy and monitor cloud applications in AWS or hybrid environments using Docker and tools like Datadog, treating reliability, security, and observability as non-negotiable fundamentals.
  • You are a natural technical leader who communicates complex ideas clearly, facilitates whiteboard design sessions, and mentors peers to raise the craft of the entire team.
  • You have structurally changed how your engineering teams build around AI, establishing shared systems and automation patterns that help peers write better code and ship faster without lowering quality.

We also give our teams access to AI tools and the encouragement to use them thoughtfully, to move faster, explore ideas, and build better ways of working.

We trust our teams to do their best work. That means autonomy, flexibility, and room to grow.

Come help us shape the future of travel.
