Summary

We are currently recruiting for Technical Business Development – Power & Drives, based in Calgary and reporting to the General Manager, Power & Drives.

This role is responsible for technically leading the identification, shaping, and development of complex electrification solutions across industrial process customers. The successful candidate will act as a technical authority and trusted advisor, translating customer operational and electrical challenges into engineered Power & Drives solutions that enable long‑term business growth.

This is not a traditional sales or relationship‑only role. Success requires strong technical credibility, hands‑on domain expertise, and the ability to independently lead advanced technical discussions with customers, partners, and internal teams.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Act as the technical subject matter expert for Power & Drives solutions including VFDs, AC motors, MCCs, switchgear, and integrated electrical systems
  • Lead front‑end technical discovery, including site assessments, requirements definition, system architecture, and feasibility evaluation
  • Translate customer operational challenges into engineered solution concepts, not product lists
  • Support customers in developing technical specifications, system standards, and application architectures
  • Collaborate closely with Account Managers and Territory Managers, providing technical leadership to advance complex opportunities
  • Deliver detailed technical presentations, workshops, and solution reviews to internal and external stakeholders
  • Engage with Principal Suppliers on technology direction, application fit, and value‑added solution development
  • Contribute technical insight to business forecasting and opportunity qualification
  • Work cross‑functionally with Sales, Operations, Engineering, and Product teams to ensure solution viability and execution excellence

Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree or diploma in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Instrumentation, (Electrical background preferred) or equivalent
  • 10+ years of progressive technical sales experience in industrial electrification, power systems and drives
  • Demonstrated hands‑on experience with:
    • Low and/or Medium Voltage Variable Frequency Drives
    • AC motors and motor applications
    • LV and/or MV Motor Control Centers and industrial Electrical Distribution
  • Proven ability to independently lead technical solution discussions with customers
  • Strong working knowledge of industrial process environments and electrification challenges

Candidates whose experience is primarily commercial, relationship‑driven, or sales‑led without deep technical ownership of engineered solutions will not be successful in this role.

Additional Capabilities

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a practical, execution‑focused mindset
  • Ability to influence without authority through technical credibility
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable operating across sales, engineering, supplier, and customer environments

As part of our recruitment process, successful candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment security background check.

Spartan recognizes that there are many ways in which candidates develop knowledge, abilities, and competencies throughout their careers. We encourage applications from candidates with a variety of backgrounds and we do consider qualifications and competencies that are equivalent to those specifically mentioned above.
