What this role is all about:

Reporting to the VP, Compliance, the Director, Compliance Advisory & Enablement enables business units to advance strategic priorities while operating within Beem’s compliance, fraud, privacy, AML/ATF, and regulatory risk expectations. The role acts as a senior enterprise advisor, thought partner, and empowered decisionmaker on behalf of Compliance, Fraud, Privacy, and AML, translating complex obligations into clear, practical guidance that helps leaders find responsible ways to move initiatives forward. Working across the organization, the Director brings a strong understanding of a large credit union operating environment and supports leaders to consider the interconnected impacts of decisions on systems, processes, people, members, and controls. The role ensures compliance considerations are embedded early in business planning, product and service development, process change, digital transformation, and operational initiatives so Compliance is experienced as a trusted partner in responsible growth.

This role is open to hybrid/remote working arrangements within British Columbia.

What you’ll do:

Strategic Compliance Enablement & Business Advisory

  • Serve as a senior Compliance advisor and strategic thought partner, enabling business units to find practical, risk-based guidance and solutions.
  • Partner with business leaders to shape options, solve complex challenges, and enable progress while ensuring compliance, fraud, privacy, AML/ATF, and regulatory risks are effectively understood and managed.
  • Partner with leaders early in the development of new products, services, process enhancements, technology initiatives, and transformation projects to identify and address fraud, privacy, AML/ATF, and regulatory considerations before key decisions are made.
  • Translate complex regulatory and financial crime requirements into business implications, options, recommendations, and implementation guidance.
  • Support leaders in making informed risk-based decisions that balance regulatory expectations, operational feasibility, member experience, strategic objectives, and risk appetite.
  • Deliver clear, timely, and empowered advisory decisions on behalf of Compliance, Fraud, Privacy, and AML, ensuring business partners receive one coordinated enterprise view.
  • Provide clear, constructive challenge and risk-based guidance by articulating when a proposed path cannot be supported, explaining the regulatory and risk rationale, outlining business implications, and recommending viable alternatives where appropriate.
  • Build and sustain trusted partnerships across business lines, positioning Compliance as a credible advisor and enabling partner that supports informed decision-making and success.

Credit Union Operating Environment & Change Enablement

  • Assess interconnected business impacts across systems, processes, people, members, controls, and regulatory obligations and inform strategic and operational decisions based on a strong understanding of the operating environment of a large credit union.
  • Assess and mitigate the impacts of proposed changes on upstream and downstream teams, member-facing operations, technology platforms, control design, operational capacity, and implementation risk.
  • Apply change management principles to support business partners in anticipating and addressing adoption challenges, communication requirements, training impacts, process ownership, and sustainable operational handoffs.
  • Support business partners through organizational change to identify, assess, escalate risks while maintaining momentum and supporting timely execution.
  • Evaluate and communicate the strategic, operational, regulatory, and member-impacts of both action and inaction to promote and influence a balanced risk culture.

Fraud, Privacy, AML/ATF & Regulatory Compliance Expertise

  • Provide senior-level subject matter expertise across fraud prevention, privacy, AML/ATF, financial crime, and regulatory compliance disciplines.
  • Advise business units on regulatory obligations and operational implications, including consumer protection, privacy, reporting, member due diligence, fraud controls, and supervisory expectations.
  • Identify compliance and financial crime risks arising from new or changing business activities, products, services, delivery channels, vendors, and member segments.
  • Provide constructive challenge and practical alternatives where proposed approaches may create regulatory, privacy, fraud, AML/ATF, reputational, or member-impact risks.
  • Maintain strong awareness of evolving regulatory expectations, industry practices, financial crime trends, and emerging risks relevant to Beem and the credit union sector.

Cross-Functional Initiative Leadership

  • Collaborate on cross-functional initiatives where compliance, fraud, privacy, AML/ATF, or regulatory considerations are material to successful delivery.
  • Partner with operations, product, digital, technology, member experience, legal, risk, and governance leaders to design and implement compliant solutions that support and efficiently execute business objectives.
  • Provide expert advice and analysis to support strategic initiatives, ensuring decisionmakers understand compliance risks, required controls, mitigation strategies, and key decision trade-offs.
  • Promote consistent escalation, documentation, and accountability where initiatives introduce material compliance or financial crime risk.
  • Apply extensive operational knowledge of financial institutions to provide practical, implementable advice that aligns with business processes and operational realities.

Risk-Based Decision Support & Compliance Integration

  • Apply sound judgment and a risk-based approach to assess compliance requirements, determine appropriate control measures, and identify, escalate or remediate risks as needed.
  • Exercise delegated decision-making authority and communicate clear positions on behalf of Compliance, Fraud, Privacy, and AML, including approvals, conditions, escalation requirements, or decisions to decline initiatives where risk cannot be managed.
  • Embed compliance requirements into business processes, controls, procedures, training, reporting, and operational guidance to support sustainable adoption.
  • Prioritize compliance activities based on materiality, regulatory exposure, member impact, operational complexity, and risk appetite.
  • Provide clear recommendations that help leaders understand options, consequences, required controls, and residual risk.
  • Document and communicate clear, defensible decision rationales that enable business partners, senior leaders, and control functions to understand requirements, risks and business impacts.
  • Implement proactive, data-informed, business-aligned second line practices that strengthen risk oversight to advance the maturity of Compliance.

Compliance Culture, Communication & Organizational Enablement

  • Provide clear guidance and advice tailored to diverse business units and leadership groups to strengthen enterprise-wide compliance literacy.
  • Communicate complex compliance matters in plain language, with a focus on clarity, actionability, and practical implementation.
  • Foster transparency, timely escalation, constructive challenge, responsible innovation, and a balanced view of risk that considers both the risk of action and the risks of inaction.

What you’ll bring:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in compliance, fraud prevention, AML/ATF, privacy, regulatory compliance, financial crime, risk management, or a related field within financial services.
  • Strong technical knowledge of fraud, privacy, AML/ATF, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong understanding of a large credit union operating environment, including how decisions affect systems, processes, people, controls, member experience, and change adoption.
  • Proven ability to influence senior leaders and advise cross-functional partners on complex matters using clear, pragmatic, and risk-based judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to make clear, defensible decisions on behalf of compliance-related functions, including explaining rationale, implications, conditions, escalations, and alternatives.
  • Experience enabling strategic initiatives, transformation efforts, product or service changes, technology implementations, or process redesign in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated ability to be adaptable and comfortable operating in a fast-paced, evolving environment where priorities shift, ambiguity is common, and timely judgment is required.
  • Strong business acumen to articulate risk-based decisions and provide constructive challenge by clearly communicating rationale, implications, and alternative paths.
  • Relevant professional designation or training in compliance, AML/ATF, privacy, fraud, risk management, or financial services is considered an asset.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
