Job description

Are you an experienced, technically adept Canadian tax or accounting practitioner who wants to broaden their focus and solve high-impact challenges for companies of all sizes and levels of complexity? Are you looking to apply your hard-earned technical skills to a new field, move into management consulting and join a multi-disciplinary team of high-performing professionals advising many of Canada’s leading companies?

As a Director in our Executive Compensation and Board Advisory (ECBA) practice, you will bring your expertise in Canadian tax and accounting to collaborate with some of the industry’s top consultants and provide first class executive compensation support and innovative solutions to our client. In return, you will develop deep and cutting-edge technical knowledge and skills in executive compensation. You will be a go-to resource for our Canadian and broader North American teams on Canadian tax and accounting issues that impact executive compensation, manage consulting projects and provide input to senior colleagues while overseeing and quality-reviewing junior staff’s work. You will learn compensation consulting skills and technical knowledge from some of Canada’s leading practitioners, working on engagements that range from the routine to the exceptional, but all of which serve to create a key link between company performance and executive pay. As you learn, you will graduate to serve as project lead on projects of smaller scope within this role.

The scope of our projects will range from those focused solely on executive compensation and board and committee effectiveness, (e.g., rewards strategy, competitive compensation analyses, annual and long-term incentive program design, pay-for-performance analyses, shareholder engagement strategy and preparation) to those involving other lines of business such as M&A due diligence and integration, total rewards strategy design and optimization assessments. Client engagements will typically be with the relevant committee(s) of the Board, senior management, or both.

You will also participate in and contribute to activities that support continued revenue growth of the Work & Rewards line of business and WTW overall. These activities may include supporting local, regional and/or national marketing events, performing industry/topical research and developing intellectual capital, and participating in our firm’s industry and/or topical teams.

Note: Employment-based non-immigrant visa sponsorship and/or assistance is not offered for this specific job opportunity.

The Role

While every day and assignments are somewhat different, some of your main responsibilities will include:

Delivering effective, consistent project management for multiple, marquee clients.

  • WTW does not provide tax or accounting advice to clients, but our work rests on a clear and accurate understanding of tax, accounting and other regulatory frameworks. You will be pivotal in providing accurate, authoritative advice and guidance to our consulting teams on Canadian tax and accounting issues that arise in relation to executive compensation matters
  • Using your technical skills to support the design of innovative solutions to client compensation challenges, with a particular emphasis on long-term incentive plans including various equity-based incentives
  • Drafting statements of work, project plans and budgets involving multiple workflow streams and client teams.
  • Serving as the day-to-day project lead, ensuring progress of the team against established objectives, budget, timeline, deliverables and quality standards.
  • Leveraging to and managing the work of junior staff, providing coaching and on-going feedback.
  • Operating as the key contact to clients on delivery of services; managing client expectations and raise appropriate issues to Senior Consultants.
  • Collaborating and contributing to the development, design and implementation of compensation programs that include total rewards strategy, competitive benchmarking, annual and long-term incentive plan design, employment contract review, change-in-control agreements, overall competitive pay analysis and pay-for-performance alignment.
  • Contributing to the development of new tools and approaches.
  • Supporting the generation of new business as part of the broader team by:
    • Assisting with new business development activities.

    • Participating in discovery discussions with prospects and developing / delivering proposals.

    • Establishing collaborative relationships with clients to understand their business and issues to better inform our consulting and to expand WTW’s relationship into new service areas.

    • Contributing to the external visibility of WTW’s brand through intellectual capital generation, drafting articles, and attending and speaking at relevant conferences.

The Requirements

  • A strong technical knowledge and understanding of applicable tax and accounting requirements – regulatory and legal expertise would be advantageous.
  • Experience advising on the tax and accounting implications of annual, equity, stock and other long- and short-term incentive programs is desirable.
  • Creative, analytical and results-driven orientation, demonstrated through the ability to draw conclusions, themes, and trends from data analysis and communicate results effectively.
  • Proven experience successfully managing multiple, multi-faceted projects and producing quality deliverables on time and within budget.
  • An executive presence with polished and well-developed communication skills, including experience making presentations and “sell” ideas to colleagues and management.
  • Self-starter attitude and ability to work within ambiguity.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent Excel and PowerPoint skills and clear, concise written and verbal communication skills.
