OVERVIEW:

The Group Underwriter supports the sales team by providing timely and accurate risk assessments and pricing for prospective and in-force group business. We are seeking candidates at both junior and intermediate levels and welcome applicants with a range of experience.

Depending on experience, successful candidates will either develop foundational underwriting expertise through structured training, coaching, and progressively more complex assignments or independently manage an assigned block of business within established authority limits. Responsibilities, underwriting authority, assigned work, and development plans will be aligned with each successful candidate’s experience.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Complete renewals and quotations of increasing complexity for health, dental, life, and disability benefits.
  • Evaluate insurance risks and establish premium rates within assigned authority limits, with coaching and review appropriate to your level of experience.
  • Review new business enrollments for health, dental, life, and income replacement benefits to confirm alignment with original quotations.
  • Maintain thorough documentation to ensure all key decisions and actions are well recorded.
  • Prepare interim and other financial and benefit reports.
  • Support other group underwriters with large renewals, revisions, and quotations as needed.
  • Participate in organizational projects as required.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING:

  • Post-secondary education in mathematics, business, economics, finance, insurance, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Strong numerical aptitude, analytical ability, sound judgment, and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain analytical findings and underwriting decisions clearly.
  • Effective decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines while working independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to receive and apply coaching and recognize when a case or decision should be escalated.
  • Self-motivation and comfort learning new concepts, asking questions, applying feedback, and developing expertise in a structured training environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn underwriting and benefits administration systems.
  • Comfort working effectively in a remote environment and collaborating through video conferencing and other digital tools.

ASSETS THAT WILL HELP YOU SUCCEED:

  • Experience in group underwriting, group benefits, insurance, financial analysis, pricing, claims, benefits administration, or another analytical environment.
  • Knowledge of group benefits, insurance, or risk assessment.
  • Familiarity with Alberta Blue Cross® products.
  • CEBS, GBA, or another underwriting-related certification.

This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is selected.

Alberta Blue Cross® is an inclusive employer committed to a workplace that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. We empower and are advocates for our team members by welcoming, respecting and valuing their unique perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences.

We offer the opportunity to work in an innovative, high-energy team-focused environment. If you have the qualifications we are looking for, apply online at careers.ab.bluecross.ca
