Title: Heavy Duty Mechanic

Location: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Reporting to: Manager – Materials Processing

Our Client

Inland Steel Products is a growing Saskatchewan and Alberta company specializing in metal recycling and processing. Over the past four and a half years, the company has expanded from three to eight locations, with continued growth ahead. In Saskatoon, Inland is looking to add multiple Heavy Duty Mechanics to support its maintenance team and a broad range of equipment. The company is focused on building strong operations, investing in its people and equipment, and maintaining a safe, team-oriented work environment.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to join Inland Steel Products' Saskatoon team in a hands-on role working across heavy equipment, trucks, trailers and other shop and field repair needs. You will support diagnostics, hydraulics, repairs, preventative maintenance and equipment reliability, with a strong focus on excavators and similar heavy-duty equipment. Inland prefers a Journeyperson Heavy Duty Mechanic but will also consider apprentices with relevant hands-on experience. The schedule is five eight-hour days, Tuesday to Saturday, with overtime available as work requires.

Key Responsibilities

As the Heavy Duty Mechanic, you will work collaboratively and be responsible for:

1. Diagnostics, Repairs & Equipment Reliability

  • Diagnose faults and equipment malfunctions to determine required repairs.
  • Repair, troubleshoot, adjust, overhaul and maintain yellow iron, stationary equipment and related systems.
  • Repair or replace defective parts, components and systems, then test equipment for proper performance.
  • Support repairs involving excavators, grapples, loaders, trucks, trailers and other site equipment.

2. Preventative Maintenance & Documentation

  • Perform preventative and routine maintenance on assets according to established schedules and company standards.
  • Complete work orders accurately and keep maintenance software current and accurate.
  • Assist with the development, maintenance and monitoring of preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain clean, functional work areas, service vehicles and maintenance facilities in accordance with company standards.

3. Shop, Field & Mechanical Support

  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems and hydraulic-driven equipment used throughout the operation.
  • Perform minor welding repairs, such as repairing cracks or brackets, and complete general mechanical maintenance as required.
  • Assist with truck and trailer repairs and other maintenance needs when required, including electrical and general repair work.
  • Support field service and travel within Saskatchewan as required to complete repairs and keep equipment operational.

4. Safety, Teamwork & Continuous Improvement

  • Actively participate in and promote Inland Steel Products' safety program and safe operating procedures.
  • Complete required safety documentation, including Field Level Hazard Assessments, near misses and hazard identifications.
  • Collaborate with team members, parts and service contacts, and third-party vendors to support timely repairs.
  • Contribute to 5S Lean manufacturing standards, housekeeping and continuous process improvement.

Qualifications

As the Heavy Duty Mechanic, you will possess the following qualities:

The Essentials (Hard Skills):

  • Journeyperson Heavy Duty Mechanic ticket is preferred; 3rd- or 4th-year apprentices are encouraged to apply, and earlier-stage apprentices may be considered with relevant prior work experience.
  • Hands-on experience diagnosing, repairing and maintaining heavy equipment, particularly excavators and similar equipment.
  • Strong diagnostic and hydraulic experience; John Deere equipment experience is preferred, and Liebherr experience is considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence and willingness to work across a variety of equipment, including trucks and trailers, as shop needs require.
  • Welding ability is an asset. Forklift, aerial platform and fall-protection certifications are also assets, with training available where needed.

The Intangibles (Soft Skills):

  • Safety-minded and committed to following safe operating procedures and company policies.
  • Organized and able to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accountability for the quality and accuracy of your work.
  • Collaborative communicator who works effectively with coworkers, supervisors and outside contacts.
  • Flexible and willing to jump in where needed, work across different equipment and see repairs through to completion.

What Our Client Offers

  • Health, dental, prescription drug and vision benefits after a three-month waiting period; Inland pays the health, dental and prescription drug premiums.
  • RRSP program with company matching up to 5% after a three-month waiting period, with a two-year vesting period.
  • $250 annual PPE allowance after the three-month probationary period, plus company-provided hard hat, gloves and coveralls.
