The Janitor works independently throughout the resort, completing scheduled cleaning duties while responding to changing operational needs throughout the day. The position requires attention to detail, effective time management, and the ability to identify and address cleanliness, safety, and facility concerns before they negatively impact the guest or employee experience.
This position also supports other areas and functions in the Facilities department, such as the parking lot and snow removal, based on operational needs and requirements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Cleaning & Facility Presentation
Clean, sanitize, and maintain public and staff washrooms, including toilets, urinals, sinks, mirrors, counters, floors, walls, fixtures, and high-touch surfaces.
Monitor washrooms throughout the operating day and replenish toilet paper, paper towel, soap, and other supplies as required.
Sweep, mop, vacuum, and clean floors in public areas, offices, hallways, stairwells, entrances, and staff spaces.
Clean windows, doors, glass, counters, furniture, fixtures, and other surfaces as required.
Empty garbage and recycling receptacles and transport waste to designated collection areas.
Maintain entrances and high-traffic areas to a clean and presentable standard throughout the operating day.
Complete periodic deep-cleaning tasks according to established daily, weekly, and seasonal schedules.
Support cleaning and facility preparation for events, functions, and periods of increased resort visitation.
Ensure cleaning equipment, supplies, and storage areas remain clean, organized, and properly maintained.
Inspections & Operational Support
Complete scheduled facility and washroom inspections and accurately maintain required cleaning logs and checklists.
Regularly monitor assigned areas rather than relying solely on reported cleanliness concerns.
Identify and promptly address spills, hazards, overflowing waste, depleted supplies, and other issues requiring immediate attention.
Report maintenance concerns, damage, leaks, plumbing issues, hazards, or equipment problems to the appropriate supervisor.
Communicate supply requirements before inventory reaches critical levels.
Assist other Facilities and Operations team members with reasonable duties when operationally required.
HEALTH & SAFETY
Perform all duties in accordance with RED Mountain Resort safety policies, procedures, and established safe work practices.
Follow WHMIS requirements and manufacturer instructions for the storage, handling, dilution, and use of cleaning chemicals.
Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) for assigned tasks.
Ensure cleaning chemicals and equipment are appropriately secured and are not left unattended in public areas.
Use appropriate signage and barriers when cleaning wet floors or addressing other temporary hazards.
Immediately report hazards, incidents, injuries, damaged equipment, or unsafe conditions.
Participate in required safety meetings, training, and workplace inspections.
GUEST SERVICE
Although primarily an operational position, the Janitor regularly works in guest-facing areas and is expected to contribute positively to the RED experience.
Maintain a professional, approachable, and helpful presence while working in public areas.
Respond courteously to reasonable guest requests and concerns.
Take ownership of cleanliness concerns when identified and address them promptly where possible.
Direct guests to the appropriate department or team member when assistance falls outside the scope of the position.
Complete cleaning activities with consideration for guest movement and resort operations.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Previous janitorial, housekeeping, custodial, or facility maintenance experience is an asset.
Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high cleanliness standards.
Dependable and able to complete assigned duties with limited supervision.
Ability to identify problems and take appropriate action without waiting for direction on routine cleaning requirements.
Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Comfortable working around guests, employees, contractors, and the general public.
Knowledge of WHMIS and safe chemical handling is an asset; training will be provided as required.
Ability to safely operate standard commercial cleaning equipment.
PHYSICAL & WORKING REQUIREMENTS
This is a physically active position within a mountain resort environment. The successful candidate must be able to:
Stand and walk for extended periods.
Regularly bend, kneel, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive cleaning activities.
Safely lift and carry cleaning supplies, garbage, and equipment.
Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and temperature conditions.
Safely navigate stairs, ramps, wet surfaces, snow, and other conditions associated with a mountain resort.
Work around cleaning chemicals and waste while following appropriate safety procedures.
Work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by resort operations.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Success in this position includes:
Public and staff facilities consistently meeting RED’s cleanliness and presentation standards.
Washrooms being regularly inspected, cleaned, and appropriately stocked throughout operating hours.
Cleaning schedules and checklists being completed accurately and consistently.
