Job description

Senior Geotechnical Applications Engineer

Edmonton, Alberta | Hybrid

Impact of this Role

As a Senior Geotechnical Applications Engineer with Xerxes, you will be a key technical resource supporting the application, installation, and field performance of underground storage tank systems. Your civil and geotechnical expertise will help ensure site-specific applications are technically sound, installation risks are understood, and customers and internal teams receive clear, practical engineering guidance.

You will influence decisions across Applications Engineering, Product Engineering, Operations, Sales, Quality, and Field Service while also representing Xerxes in technical engagement with standards organizations, regulators, listing agencies, and other external technical bodies. Your work will help translate site conditions, field experience, regulatory requirements, and engineering analysis into better technical decisions and a consistent customer experience.

What Success Looks Like

  • Review site-specific underground tank applications and confidently evaluate burial depth, groundwater conditions, surface and traffic loads, site constraints, anchoring requirements, and other installation parameters against Xerxes requirements and applicable standards.
  • Prepare, review, and approve buoyancy, anchoring, soil, and backfill analyses, applying civil and geotechnical engineering principles to assess groundwater, shoring, load distribution, excavation geometry, foundation support, and installation risks.
  • Provide clear and timely technical recommendations to customers and internal stakeholders, including support for complex or highly customized installations.
  • Lead field investigations and root cause failure analyses, own the technical outcome, document findings, and develop practical corrective and preventive recommendations in partnership with Quality, Product Engineering, Operations, and Field Service.
  • Lead Xerxes technical engagement with standards organizations, listing agencies, regulators, and authorities having jurisdiction, communicating changes, interpretations, and emerging requirements to Engineering and Operations.
  • Independently manage and prioritize technical requests through the customer support process, balancing customer expectations, business priorities, technical risk, and established service expectations while maintaining clear and traceable documentation.
  • Identify recurring issues and turn lessons learned into improved guidance, procedures, training, and continuous improvement actions that strengthen the quality and consistency of Applications Engineering support.

What You Bring to the Role

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline. Graduate education in Geotechnical Engineering is preferred.
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience, with more than 10 years preferred.
  • Professional Engineer registration.
  • Demonstrated civil and geotechnical engineering experience involving soil behavior, backfill, groundwater, buried structures, foundations, buoyancy, anchoring, load distribution, and site-specific installation assessment.
  • Strong understanding of underground structures. Experience with underground storage tanks, fiber-reinforced polymer products, water and wastewater infrastructure, fuel systems, or other buried infrastructure is strongly preferred.
  • Experience interpreting and applying engineering codes, industry standards, product listings, and regulatory requirements, including engagement with regulatory bodies and authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Demonstrated experience leading field investigations, failure and root cause analysis, technical reporting, and the development of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Strong technical judgment, prioritization, stakeholder management, and customer-facing communication skills, with the ability to explain complex engineering requirements to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • The ability to work proactively and independently while collaborating respectfully within an established team and influencing change tactfully.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Excel, Outlook, and Word. Experience with customer support portals, enterprise resource planning systems, and engineering calculation or analysis tools is advantageous.
  • Ability to travel to customer sites, manufacturing facilities, and industry or regulatory meetings as required.
