The Opportunity

Our Strategy & Business Planning team is seeking a Business Analyst to support the commercial and strategic analysis of natural gas demand across the North American power sector, a critical and growing source of natural gas demand and an increasingly important driver of long-term market opportunities.

Reporting to the Manager, Gas Market Analysis, this role will serve as a key analytical resource focused on understanding the intersection of natural gas and power markets. The successful candidate will evaluate natural gas market fundamentals, power generation fuel requirements, emerging market opportunities, and asset performance, leveraging market intelligence, forecasting, and advanced analytics to support business planning, commercial strategy, and long-term portfolio optimization.

The role will work closely with Commercial Management, Power Analysis, and Gas Supply teams to translate market developments into actionable insights that inform the TC Gas Outlook, identify emerging growth and investment opportunities, and support strategies to maximize asset value.

What You'll Do

  • Analyze natural gas demand and fuel requirements across the North American power sector, including key drivers of gas-fired generation and regional demand growth.
  • Evaluate emerging sources of electricity demand, including data centers and other large loads, and assess their implications for power generation requirements, natural gas demand, and infrastructure opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain natural gas demand, supply, and pricing forecasts to support commercial strategy, business planning, and long-term decision-making.
  • Evaluate power market fundamentals, including electricity demand growth, generation trends, fuel-switching economics, generation additions and retirements, and regional supply-demand balances.
  • Conduct scenario and sensitivity analysis to assess the implications of natural gas prices, power market conditions, generation dispatch, and other market uncertainties on gas demand and asset performance.
  • Assess regulatory, environmental, and policy developments and their implications for power generation, natural gas demand, infrastructure requirements, and commercial strategy.
  • Develop and maintain analytical models supporting power-sector gas demand forecasting, generation analysis, scenario development, and long-term market outlooks.
  • Monitor North American natural gas and power markets to identify emerging trends, risks, and commercial opportunities.
  • Translate complex market analysis into clear, actionable insights through dashboards, management reporting, and executive-level presentations.
  • Partner with Commercial Management, Power Analysis, Gas Supply, and other internal stakeholders to evaluate market opportunities and support strategic initiatives.
  • Identify and implement improvements to analytical processes, data management, and reporting automation to enhance efficiency, consistency, and decision quality.
  • Provide data-driven recommendations to leadership by integrating quantitative analysis, market intelligence, and commercial considerations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • University degree in Economics, Commerce, Business, Finance, Statistics, Engineering, Mathematics, Energy Management, or a related discipline.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in energy market analysis, commercial analysis, business strategy, or other relevant analytical roles.
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to translate complex market information into actionable business insights.
  • Demonstrated experience developing market forecasts, economic and analytical models, and strategic insights using large and complex datasets.
  • Strong understanding of North American natural gas and power markets, including power generation economics, fuel requirements, market fundamentals, and the key drivers of natural gas demand.
  • Ability to integrate natural gas and power market fundamentals to identify emerging risks, opportunities, and implications for energy infrastructure and commercial strategy.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Power BI, with experience using data analytics and visualization tools to support market analysis and decision-making.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex analysis, key implications, and recommendations to leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple priorities, exercise sound judgment, and deliver high-quality analysis in a dynamic and evolving business environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in natural gas, power generation, energy trading, utilities, midstream, or energy infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of North American natural gas markets, supply-demand fundamentals, and pipeline systems.
  • Understanding of power markets, generation economics, dispatch dynamics, and energy storage technologies.
  • Experience performing market forecasting, fundamental analysis, and scenario modeling.
  • Knowledge of North American power markets.
  • Experience using forecasting models, statistical tools, or energy market analytics platforms.
  • Familiarity with business intelligence, automation, and data visualization technologies.
