Job description

HR Consultant

True North HR Consulting

Greater Toronto Area - $55–$65/hour - 30–40 hrs/week

About the role

You've spent the last several years as an HR generalist or HRBP, and you're ready for something different. Instead of supporting one company, you want to support many.

As an HR Consultant at True North, you'll support a rotating portfolio of clients across industries on the day-to-day and project work that keeps their HR running well: handling employee relations issues, putting policies and programs in place, supporting organizational changes, and answering compliance questions with clear, practical advice. You'll work directly with business owners, managers, and HR contacts, and you'll work alongside our Senior HR Consultants on larger strategic engagements.

You won't be doing it alone. You'll be backed by a team of specialist consultants covering recruitment, HRIS implementations, total rewards design and pay equity — so you can stay focused on the generalist work where you add the most value and pull in expertise when your clients need it.

This isn't a remote desk job. You'll spend most of your week on-site with clients across the GTA, with remote flexibility built in around client needs. A reliable vehicle and clean driving record are required.

What you'll actually be doing

The work shifts week to week, but the throughline is the same: showing up as the HR partner your clients can count on for sound advice and reliable follow-through. In a given month, you might:

  • Work with a Senior HR Consultant on a client's HR strategy, from assessing where the client is today to carrying out the roadmap
  • Conduct a workplace investigation and prepare the findings report
  • Guide a manager through a difficult performance conversation or termination
  • Audit a client's HR practices for compliance gaps and help build the remediation plan
  • Help a client put IDEA principles into practice in their hiring, policies, and culture
  • Support a change management process through a reorg or acquisition
  • Build out performance management, onboarding, or succession planning programs
  • Develop policies and employee handbooks tailored to a client's stage and culture
  • Bring in our specialist consultants when a client needs recruitment support, an HRIS implementation, a total rewards or pay equity project — and stay close to the work as the client's primary HR partner

You'll manage your own client files from start to finish, and you'll know when to bring in a Senior HR Consultant for guidance.

Who we're looking for

A true HR generalist with 10 years of progressive HR experience, in-house or in consulting, who is ready to take on more responsibility and work directly with clients. Beyond the résumé, you:

  • Communicate with confidence and build trust quickly with managers and employees
  • Are genuinely energized by variety, not just tolerant of it
  • Can switch contexts cleanly between three clients in a single day
  • Follow through without being chased
  • Catch the details others miss
  • Operate with discretion and integrity — you've handled sensitive things and you know how to hold them

Required: Bachelor's degree in HR, Business, or related field. Solid working knowledge of Canadian (Ontario) employment law and HR best practices. Experience developing and implementing HR programs, policies, and processes. Experience supporting IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) initiatives. Comfort with Microsoft 365 and Zoom. Familiarity with common HRIS platforms (BambooHR, Humi/Employment Hero, or similar). Reliable vehicle and clean driving record.

Bonus: CHRP or CHRL designation. Prior consulting experience would be considered a strong asset.

What we offer

  • $55–$65/hour, with flexible scheduling
  • Full health benefits (Health, Dental, Vision, LTD, AD&D, Travel, EAP)
  • A collaborative team of senior HR consultants and specialists — you won't be on an island
  • Real exposure to leadership across industries and company stages
  • Mentorship and professional development support

A few things worth knowing

Work volume varies with client demand — this suits someone who values flexibility over a fixed 40-hour week. We don't use AI to screen or assess applicants; every application is reviewed by a person. We're an equal opportunity employer and welcome accommodation requests at any stage of the process. This posting is for a new addition to the team.

If this sounds like the next chapter for you, we'd love to hear from you. Applicants selected for interviews will be notified within legislated timelines.
