Position Summary

The Human Resources Generalist provides day-to-day HR support and is responsible for day-to-day HR operations across recruitment, employee relations, benefits, training and development, performance management, compliance, records, and reporting. Reporting to the Human Resource Manager, the HR Generalist works closely with managers and employees to deliver fair, consistent, and culturally respectful HR services that support Nak’azdli Whut’en’s operational and community priorities.

The HR Generalist independently manages routine HR processes and makes operational decisions within established policies and delegated authority, referring complex, sensitive, or exceptional matters to the HR Manager.

Key Responsibilities

Recruitment and Staffing

• Coordinate the full recruitment cycle, including job postings, resume screening, interviews, and candidate communication.

• Work with hiring managers to understand staffing needs, define position requirements, and support fair and consistent selection decisions.

• Confirm that required staffing and recruitment approvals are documented; refer approval exceptions to the HR Manager.

• Provide the HR Manager with complete recruitment documentation and approved candidate information. Only the HR Manager prepares and issues employment agreements and offer letters, and prepares amendments, subject to required organizational approvals.

Employee Relations & Policy Reinforcement

• Respond to employee relations concerns, support the HR Manager or external contractor in workplace investigations.

• Advise managers and employees on HR policies, procedures, workplace expectations, and appropriate next steps.

• Resolve routine HR questions within established policies and delegated authority. Escalate harassment or violence allegations, discrimination complaints, serious employee relations concerns, formal disciplinary matters, and proposed terminations to the HR Manager and designated authorities.

Benefits and Employee Development

  • Administer employee benefit programs, including health, retirement, and related benefits, and respond to employee questions.
  • Coordinate STD and LTD claims, documentation, employee and provider communications, status tracking, and return-to-work activities.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with benefits, pension, and insurance providers to resolve eligibility, coverage, enrolment, and claims-related matters.
  • Identify training needs and coordinate the development, delivery, and evaluation of training and employee-development programs.

Performance Management

• Support the consistent use of performance-management processes and documentation.

• Guide managers on goal setting, performance feedback, coaching, and performance-improvement plans.

• Provide managers with practical guidance on approved performance processes; do not independently authorize formal discipline or employment decisions.

Compliance Records and Reporting

• Monitor applicable employment legislation, human rights requirements, organizational policies, and HR best practices, and periodically review HR practices and records to support compliance.

• Maintain accurate, current, and confidential employee records in the HR information system and personnel files.

• Prepare HR reports and workforce metrics for management as required, and complete other related duties assigned by the Human Resources Manager.

• Provide verified, approved HR employment information to Payroll or Finance as needed. Payroll calculations, processing, adjustments, statutory deductions, timesheet administration, and payment issuance are outside this position’s responsibilities. The HR Generalist must not independently approve changes to compensation.

• Maintain an HR action tracker, monitor recruitment and onboarding progress, follow up on outstanding requests, and recommend improvements to HR service delivery.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in human resources, business administration, or a related field is preferred.

• Approximately three years of progressively responsible HR experience is preferred, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education, including demonstrated ability to manage routine HR operations independently.

• Experience working with a First Nations government, Indigenous organization, or community-based service environment is an asset.

• Working knowledge of applicable employment legislation, HR policies, employee relations practices, recruitment, benefits, performance management, and workplace investigations.

• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with sound judgment and the ability to handle conflict professionally.

• Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, maintain accurate records, and work independently and collaboratively.

• Demonstrated discretion and ability to protect confidential and sensitive employee information.

• Certified Indigenous Human Resources Professional (CIHRP) designation through AFOA Canada, progress toward CIHRP, or a recognized HR designation such as CPHR is a strong asset; professional certification is not mandatory.

• Proficiency with HR information systems and Microsoft Office applications.

Additional Requirements

  • Satisfactory criminal record check.
  • Class 5 driver’s License in good standing.
  • Willingness to sign and comply with Nak’azdli Whut’en’s Oath of Confidentiality and Code of Ethics.

Work Location

The position is based at the Nak’azdli Whut’en Administration Office in Fort St. James as a 100% on-site position. Regular work from the Prince George satellite office or remotely is not available. The successful candidate must reliably attend the Fort St. James workplace in accordance with their assigned schedule.

Hours of Work

This is a full-time salaried position based on a 35-hour workweek. Regular office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Occasional work outside regular hours may be required to meet operational needs.

Working Conditions

• Office-based work involving extended computer use, phone calls, email, meetings, presentations, and periods of sitting.

• Regular handling of sensitive and confidential information and occasional emotionally charged employee-relations matters.
