Job description

Hughes Collective is pleased to present an exciting opportunity on behalf of our client.

Title: Food Store Manager

Location: Moosomin, SK

Reporting to: Director of Operations - Food

Our Client

Our client is a long-standing co-operative operating across southeastern Saskatchewan. What began as a small local operation has grown into a multi-division retail organization with locations supporting agriculture, fuel, food, and home and building supplies.

Their locations are part of the daily rhythm of the communities around them. Farmers stop in before heading to the field, families fuel up on their way through town, and regular customers know the staff behind the counter by name.

Across the organization you will find experienced teams and leaders who run their locations with clear expectations and strong operational standards. Many employees have been with the co-operative for years, creating an environment where knowledge is shared, new staff are supported, and people understand the importance of the work they do in their communities.

The Opportunity

As the Food Store Manager, you'll step into an established operation with a strong team and a positive workplace culture worth preserving. You'll lead five department managers, support their development, and work together to improve financial performance, strengthen store operations, and deliver an excellent customer experience.

The 30,000-square-foot flagship store serves as a central hub for the co-operative's food operations across southeastern Saskatchewan, with expanded fresh food departments and production capacity that supports other locations. With 2026 sales projected at $21 million, you'll have considerable responsibility for the financial performance of the store, along with the opportunity to introduce new ideas and influence how the business continues to grow.

Key Responsibilities

As the Food Store Manager, you will work collaboratively and are responsible for:

1. Store Operations & Merchandising

  • Oversee operations across grocery, meat, produce, bakery, and deli departments, maintaining high standards for product quality, merchandising, and store presentation.
  • Direct merchandising, promotional activities, product selection, and pricing to support customer needs and store performance.
  • Oversee purchasing, ordering, receiving, and inventory management to maintain product availability, minimize shrink, and reduce unnecessary costs.
  • Ensure store facilities, equipment, and operational processes are maintained to support efficient and safe operations.

2. Financial Performance & Business Growth

  • Develop and manage annual operating budgets, with accountability for store sales, margins, expenses, inventory, and overall profitability.
  • Review financial statements and operational reports to monitor performance, identify concerns, and implement improvements.
  • Establish departmental sales objectives and work with managers to achieve financial targets and identify opportunities for business growth.
  • Maintain effective financial controls related to cash handling, purchasing, markdowns, inventory transfers, and accounts receivable.

3. Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead five department managers and shift leaders, providing oversight and direction to a store team of approximately 80 employees.
  • Coach and develop department managers, establish performance expectations, and hold leaders accountable for departmental results.
  • Oversee recruitment, staffing, training, and performance management to support employee development and operational needs.
  • Maintain a positive and collaborative workplace culture where employees are supported, communication is encouraged, and individual contributions are recognized.

4. Customer Experience, Safety & Compliance

  • Maintain high customer service standards across all departments, addressing concerns and identifying opportunities to improve the shopping experience.
  • Develop positive relationships with customers and the surrounding community while supporting the organization's commitment to personalized service.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, occupational health and safety, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee store security, asset protection, and safety procedures to protect employees, customers, and company resources.

Qualifications

As the Food Store Manager, you will possess the following qualities:

The Essentials (Hard Skills):

  • 6+ years of relevant experience in retail food operations, including a minimum of 3 years leading managers or other leaders within a grocery environment.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing multi-department grocery operations, including merchandising, purchasing, inventory management, pricing, and customer service.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, sales performance, margin management, expense control, and financial statement analysis.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop department managers while maintaining accountability for operational performance and team results.
  • Knowledge of retail food safety standards, operational policies, asset protection, and regulatory requirements.
  • Relevant education or professional training in grocery operations, retail management, or business administration is considered an asset.
  • Previous management experience within the Co-operative Retailing System is considered a strong asset.

The Intangibles (Soft Skills):

  • An approachable and capable leader who earns the respect of their team, sets clear expectations, and supports the development of others.
  • Strong business instincts and a results-oriented mindset, with the initiative to identify opportunities and improve store performance.

  • An organized, decisive, and accountable professional who can manage competing priorities while maintaining a collaborative and supportive workplace culture.
